Watercolor, Doodles, and Scanning

I love to doodle! It is a great art journal tool for me, a practice of mindfulness, and just simply fun. When I chose to mix a little doodle with some watercolor it takes my doodles to a completely different place! The addition of color can elevate the initial simple drawing or combinations of lines to a place I have come to value.

Sometimes, though, choosing to add color, whether from watercolor or any other art supply can be a bit scary. Therefore, I have the practice of scanning drawings or taking pictures of them and then tracing them to another page, paper, or substrate.

I have found this to be a wonderful process. I it allows me to save my drawings, to reuse them with multiple projects, and of course to share them with you. Favorite Watercolor Brushes

Although, I took on watercolor as a medium to explore in greater detail last year, I have worked with watercolor for a several years. I came to appreciate watercolor brushes for various reasons, with my travel set, my absolute favorite! Watercolor travels well, requiring little setup, tools, and art supplies. I am never in an airport without my watercolor and travel set of brushes. That said, I have several brushes I value and have listed them below. I too, take them with me, but I chose them as a compliment to my travel set, based on project(s) I have in mind for the trip. At home, I keep all of them near; however, my go to is the Neptune 4 piece set below. I value watercolor brushes, take care of them, and I am open to trying other brushes.

Title: Watercolor & Mindfulness

Last year I took on watercolor as a medium to explore and I fell in love with the process! There, I found the flow of water, the delicacy of colors, and the practice of patience far more rewarding than anticipated! Initially I sought out watercolor as a medium to explore to improve my art skills, diversify, and to “master”. Rhetorical question, does anyone “master” watercolor and the flow of water?

Of greater value, I discovered the process of watercolor, grounds me. Of course, I have gained valuable experience with the medium; however, more importantly, the practice of watercolor has resulted in a practice of meditation of sorts.

I am known for being in a constant state of motion, both of body and mind. I struggle with simply being still. Personally, I am aware of my inner struggle with thoughts. It is in my quiet space where thoughts I avoid enter. Knowing this, I was surprised to discover the watercolor process an effective means to slow me down, disconnect, breathe, and simply recover, without the onslaught of those nasty thoughts that so often creep in. Subsequently, I’ve now shifted my intention with watercolor from an artist tool to explore, to simply a tool of mindfulness that affords me an avenue to relax, slow down, disconnect, and recharge.

Free Easy Step-by-Step Watercolor Class Guided Watercolor Paint Experience

We are painting a simple cosmos and doodle. The simple piece is great as a stand alone for yourself or as a card, gift for someone special. Please leave comments. Message me in the event or send me a direct message (DM) or private message (PM) and I can work on answering everyone’s questions.

Paper –9 x 12 watercolor paper watercolor paper cold press paper. I will be using student grade paper, 98 lb and 140 lb for the class.
Tape – Duck Clean Release Blue Painter’s Tape 1-Inch (0.94-Inch x 60-Yard), 6 Rolls, 360 Total Yards, 240459
Paint – Listed below are the colors from the set that I will be using. Use whatever is close and fits in your budget.

Simple Wall Easel Solution

I have long battled with my canvas set-up, tear-down, and simply enough space, until now! Gratefully, I was able to enlist a friend to assist me in the project. I am limited in mobility requiring me to be mindful of my body. So, my focus for the wall easel design, first, ease of use, I needed to be able to manage the adjustments of multiple canvases in varying sizes, myself with minimal difficulty. Too, it had to meet a minimal budget, create as few holes in the walls, and be an efficient use of space.

We were successful!

I now have more creative time, due to less tear down and putting up, re-work. This has improved my workflow, work performance, and overall creativity. Such a blessing. Students have since seen the new setup and are now putting them up in their own studio, homes, and creative space, as well.

A time of reflection, reward, and commitment

My life experience with this time of year, December, the ending of one year and the beginning of the next, has been less than pleasant; however, that is not true of this year, 2021. Amazingly enough, last year, I made a personal commitment to myself to explore and discover joy in my life. I succeeded in discovering the wonder and complexity of joy, by establishing a process for self-honesty, end of story.

As a part of that process, I came to the realization that I need to change my thinking. That process was and is complicated and I do intend to share more of the process throughout 2022, but right now, I would simply like to share one simple thing. I chose to give myself, minimally, the same respect I would give a stranger. With that I chose to love myself as a human being and to treat myself with kindness and compassion.

For accountability, I committed to a daily affirmation, to positivity, and motivation that I would share publicly. I kept that commitment through a daily post to Instagram comprised of some original art, some art journal pages, and a doodle or two.
